Friends Donate New Fitness Trail to South Park
Ribbon Cut on New Fitness Trail in South Park
The group known as "The Friends of South
the County Park," raised
money through various fundraising efforts to purchase new equipment to install a 20 station
Fitness Trail around the Gazebo on Maple Springs Drive.
The Friends Group gifted the equipment to South Park and
the workers of the Allegheny County Public Works Department
professionally installed the equipment in September 2013.
In order to obtain the funds for the new trail, the friends sponsored 2 golf
outings, an Oldies Dance, 2-Wine Tasting events, and a flea
market. Tom Woods chaired the fitness trail endeavor along
with co-chairs Sharon and Butch Adams.
The original fitness
trail was over 25 years old and most of the equipment was
missing or in disarray. Tom and Sharon searched for a comparable
fitness trail that had the similarities of the old trail.
It was imperative that it blended in with the natural surroundings,
was made for people of all ages and was affordable. It was
purchased through South Wood Corporation in Charlotte, North
Carolina. The trail carries a Ten-year guarantee against
structural defects, rot and termite infestation. The sign
panels have a guarantee against breakage for five years.
The Friends received approval from the
County in May of 2013 to proceed with the project.
